Sharmila Karki
M.Ed. in ELT, Kathmandu, Nepal | Diploma in Social Services, USA
Sharmila Karki is the Co-Founder and Director of the Better Life Social Organization (BLSO) USA. Originally from Panchthar, Nepal, she moved to Kathmandu with her father and brother at the age of five. Growing up in a rural community, Sharmila witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children and families, especially in education, healthcare, and financial stability. While she did not experience these hardships herself, she developed a deep empathy for those around her, which inspired her lifelong commitment to social change and improving lives.
Sharmila now resides in New Hampshire with her family, where she continues her community involvement by engaging in local initiatives such as the Lebanon Rotary Club and a variety of volunteer programs. She is passionate about fostering cultural exchange and creating opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together. Sharmila regularly organizes gatherings that promote sharing of meals, traditions, and experiences, and she actively participates in a group dance and cultural events at the local library to strengthen community bonds.
Beyond her nonprofit endeavors, Sharmila and her husband have built multiple successful businesses, including Golden Star Travel Tours, Flourish International Education, Sky Touch Travels & Tours, and Homestay Kusunti Nepal. These businesses not only created economic opportunities but also supported community-based initiatives, with a special focus on charitable work under BLSO Nepal.
As the former Co-Founder & Executive Director of BLSO Nepal, Sharmila played a pivotal role in providing critical support to vulnerable communities. Her leadership ensured that essential services, including healthcare, education, and disaster relief, were extended to those in need. Tragically, in 2015, while visiting her family in the U.S., Sharmila’s businesses and home in Nepal were severely damaged in the devastating earthquake. Despite this setback, Sharmila’s dedication to serving others remained firm. She continued her work in the healthcare and human services sector while furthering her social service studies to enhance her ability to support both Nepalese and U.S. communities.
Sharmila’s passion for improving the lives of children and families both in Nepal and the U.S. is a constant source of inspiration to those around her. Her leadership, resilience, and compassion continue to empower communities, foster positive change, and create a brighter future for those in need.
